Padrón: The register of local residents

← Browse all 60 words

What does it mean?

The padrón is the municipality’s record of the people who habitually live there. It is the register itself; empadronamiento is the act of registering.

Padrón registration and immigration residence are separate. Do not use one as a substitute for checking the other.

An everyday example

A school asks about your padrón. Clarify whether it needs a certificate, not another registration.

What to do next

  1. Identify the municipality where you normally live.
  2. Ask its town hall whether you need a new registration, a change of address or evidence of an existing entry.
  3. Check the spelling of your name and the address on any document issued.
  4. Keep the town hall’s contact details with your housing records.

A useful question to ask

Am I already registered at my current address?
