IVTM: Municipal vehicle tax
Understand ivtm, what to check and the practical steps to take.
What does it mean?
IVTM stands for Impuesto sobre Vehículos de Tracción Mecánica. It is the municipal vehicle tax, often called impuesto de circulación.
It is separate from insurance, an ITV charge and a vehicle-registration tax or fee.
An everyday example
A payment labelled circulation tax does not renew your insurance or your ITV.
What to do next
- Check the vehicle and tax year on the bill.
- Identify the municipality or collection body handling it.
- Confirm the payment calendar and any direct debit.
- After buying, selling or changing address, ask how the tax record and responsibility are affected.
A useful question to ask
Which municipality is charging this bill, and for which vehicle and year?
