NIE: your foreigner identification number
A number used to identify you in Spanish administration—not the same thing as a residence card.
What does it mean?
NIE stands for Número de Identidad de Extranjero. It is a personal, unique identifier. You may need it for economic, professional or social dealings with Spain.
Having a NIE is not, by itself, permission to live or work in Spain. A NIE number and a TIE card are different things.
What to do next
- Check whether a Spanish document already shows your NIE. Ask the office handling your procedure before applying for another number.
- Identify why you need the number and whether you are applying in Spain or through the Spanish consulate responsible for where you live.
- Read the official application instructions. Prepare the prescribed form, valid identity documentation and evidence explaining your reason for applying.
- Confirm the appointment arrangements, applicable fee and document requirements with the responsible office. Keep a copy of your submission.
A useful question to ask
Do I need a NIE allocation, or am I actually applying for residence documentation?
