TIE: the foreigner identity card
Understand the card, the permission behind it and what to check before booking an appointment.
What does it mean?
TIE stands for Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero. It records a foreign national’s administrative status in Spain. It is not the NIE number itself, and does not replace your passport.
The correct process depends on your nationality and residence route. Do not assume that applying for a card is the same as obtaining permission to reside.
What to do next
- Identify your route and check that the relevant permission or right has been recognised. First issue, renewal and replacement are different procedures.
- Use the official guidance to find the correct police documentation office and appointment procedure for your province.
- Check the exact form, passport, photograph, fee evidence and any additional documents required for your case.
- Confirm your route’s deadline promptly. Attend personally as instructed and retain your receipt and collection instructions.
A useful question to ask
Is this appointment for my residence application, or for issuing the card after that stage?
