Receta electrónica: Collecting an electronic prescription
Understand receta electrónica, what to check and the practical steps to take.
What does it mean?
An electronic prescription is recorded digitally. Spain’s interoperable public system supports collection across autonomous communities using the healthcare card.
Do not assume that every foreign or private electronic prescription works through the same system.
An everyday example
Before travelling within Spain, check your collection arrangements rather than waiting until medicine runs out.
What to do next
- Check with the prescriber that the treatment is active.
- Bring your physical or supported virtual public healthcare card to the pharmacy.
- When collecting in another region, identify the region where it was prescribed.
- Carry your treatment list and ask the pharmacist what to do if the prescription cannot be retrieved.
A useful question to ask
Can you access my prescription through this system?
